Before my mother was transferred home yesterday, she was given Ativan because the staff said she was anxious. Mama has been in and out of 2 different hospitals several times, transferred to 2 different nursing homes several times, taken to the wound care center several times and not once was she deemed "anxious" throughout it all. She raised us kids during the week by herself while Daddy worked out of town, and handled it all beautifully. She's even been in a bank robbery with a gun held to her while working as a teller. Funny, how she suddenly becomes anxious when told she was finally able to go home - the place she'd begged Daddy to take her over and over again.
Now, the ativan has made her agitated and she's talking out of her head. Daddy is handling it well, saying it doesn't bother him. He understands and is determined that she not be given any more. Why in the world nursing homes and hospice insist on this practice (which I'm told is commonplace) is beyond me.
If you've had any experiences with this drug and the elderly, please let me know.
