Study: 420K Congolese women raped each year — 1 every minute

Zawadi Luendo, 30, cradles her daughter in front of her house where she says she was raped by three men who broke down the walls of her home after she barred the door in Luvungi, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The village of Luvungi was attacked on July 30 by Hutu rebels of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda and local militias, who allegedly raped more than 280 women and minors as punishment for what they said was the villagers' support for the Congolese Defense Forces.

Transcending already-shocking statistics, new research published today concludes that more than 420,000 women in the Democratic Republic of Congo are raped each year -- roughly 48 per hour and 1,152 per day. Read the horrific full article here.
