Zawadi Luendo, 30, cradles her daughter in front  of her house where she says she was raped by three men who broke down  the walls of her home after she barred the door in Luvungi, eastern  Democratic Republic of Congo. The village of Luvungi was attacked on  July 30 by Hutu rebels of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of  Rwanda and local militias, who allegedly raped more than 280 women and  minors as punishment for what they said was the villagers' support for  the Congolese Defense Forces. Transcending already-shocking statistics, new research published today concludes that more than 420,000 women in the Democratic Republic of Congo are raped each year -- roughly 48 per hour and 1,152 per day.
